We found so many contradictions in this report that it needed a special mention. Media is considered the Fourth pillar of our democracy and if they are not reporting things correctly in a coherent way, its a sign of pending disaster.
Here are our observations
1. The report says its a "branding exercise" by Mr. Akhilesh to counter a similar model of development by Mr. Modi. River is just the battle ground.
2. The report clearly documents the massive construction and paving of fragile riverbed and flood plain. It also lists jogging trails, stadiums, fountains, theaters and a long list of construction activities pending.
3. The report has Chief Minister saying on record that River is going to be jacketed between walls. (3:08 - 6:39)
4. The report says Environment experts say its very good but there are dangers, but expert only speaks about dangers.
5. The report clearly indicates the functioning of rubber dam and its use in holding the water.
6. The report clearly indicates the plan on a pending river linking project.
7. The report clearly indicates the cost to project is 3000 Crore rupees and 12.8 KM long.
8. The report clearly highlights our own prejudice about anything foreign. So Gomti should become like Thames, Can't she be herself and we can be proud of her and keep her healthy?
9. The report clearly indicates the reasons on why such a sensitive project is rushed through, contradicting any western way of river side development where even a small development in such a fragile zone goes through decades. Its rushing for election and cutting the ribbon to get votes.
10. The report also signifies Indian mentality to keep a selfie over long term survival. Hope this changes soon.
Now on the style of reporting by Mr. Pankaj Jha and ABP news.
1. The expert never said this development is very good, why your reporter is quoting it? (4:52 - 5:20)
2. Do you think the tone of your reporting justifies the content? The content and report is all about
Massive interference with a river system which will lead to a disaster (as per experts) and its just as a political branding exercise to supposedly win elections, praying on the selfie mentality of us Indians.
But your Reporters keep quoting "Sham-e-Avadh etc..." to give the report a positive color. We fail to understand this. Any Answers?
What are we looking for?
Based on empirical evidences and experiences in recent past we are looking at a water catastrophe in India. The country faces drought or deluge, millions moving out of agriculture and then into urban systems without any transition or training. This will not only give to loss of life and land but can be a reason of major unrest in India.
At this point of time we are aiming to build a strong representation to protect water and natural systems at the local level. We want policy interventions and strong implementation at states level to keep natural resources untouched and free to take their own form for generations to come.
If you are someone who knows about local water systems in your community and want to actually work on making them better, send the details on coordinators@ballotboxindia.com
If you know someone who can make a difference, make an introduction with this effort, you can also write to coordinators@ballotboxindia.com, or fill "Contact a coordinator" form by clicking the buttons on this page.
If you have a few hours to work in your community for common good, let us know and join as a coordinator.
Would my efforts be funded? Yes if you have some time, skill and aptitude to make a difference, ballotboxindia is the right platform. Get in touch with coordinators@ballotboxindia.com with your details.
Thanks
