Facebook started as a promise to connect the world seems to have opened portals between worlds which were otherwise guarded by information ombudsmen of sorts in politics, media and public. Issues ranging from depression, mental health, long-term damages to the whole psyche of the masses, data colonization, corporate greed, subversion of democracies, foreign influence in elections, monopolizing, crony capitalism is now coined with Facebook.

Being under fire from all directions, Facebook is a massive marketing machine with carefully crafted psychological loops and is constantly tapping on to the people who were across the border "to be" digital immigrants from - far furlong places, villages, elders at a rapid pace. People who don't have the purchasing power to be the proposed targets of customer-centric business, but of course they are one vote, which will speak during the elections.

The marketing loops built on Facebook are complex, ranging from pointless entertainment, leading step by step to more serious stuff. Brute force money pumped to amplify political propaganda, to the subversion of masses to a brittle, marginal, more aggressive lot which can be triggered with precision into a mob frenzy.

Facebook is dangerous, especially since its controlled directly and indirectly from off-shore,  yet it offers superior functions which keep bringing people back to it. Smaller governments like Sri-Lanka, when faced with major social unrest, did ban it, but then succumbed to get it back online.

- So what is Facebook? and how it became so big? Was it always made for its use right now, or it evolved as a pivot?

- What are the dangers of Facebook and similar technologies to a country like India? Where we are understanding is still nascent and driven by public demand, looking to catch up quickly with the west.

- What can be done so dangers can be averted and building a safe internet and stable democracy?

We will discuss these points this Sunday the 30th 2018 @9 AM IST. Do join in.-
