लगभग 40 वर्षों से राजनीति में सक्रिय ओमप्रकाश जी ने अपने जीवन का ज्यादातर समय समाजसेवा को ही समर्पित किया है. समाज के दबे- कुचले, गरीब वर्ग के प्रति सहानुभूति व अपनत्व की भावना के चलते वह शुरू से ही लोगों के लिए कुछ करना चाहते थे. इसी उद्देश्य के साथ उन्होंने 1981- 82 में राजनीतिक क्षेत्र में पदार्पण किया.

जनसेवा करते हुए वह सर्वप्रथम कांग्रेस पार्टी से जुड़े तथा कई वर्षों तक पार्टी के लिए पूरी कर्मठता से कार्य भी किया. किन्तु कांग्रेस से पार्षदी का टिकट न मिलने के कारण उन्होंने निर्दलीय ही चुनाव लड़ने का निर्णय लिया. सन् 2012 में उन्होंने ग्वालटोली से न सिर्फ निर्दलीय प्रत्याशी के रूप में चुनाव लड़ा, बल्कि उसमें सफलता भी हासिल की.

ग्वालटोली (वार्ड – 4) के प्रमुख मुद्दों पर ओमप्रकाश जी का कहना है कि उनके वार्ड से कानपुर नगर का एक बड़ा नाला जुड़ा हुआ है, जिससे वार्ड में गंदगी व प्रदूषण फैलता है. इसके लिए अपने कार्यकाल में उन्होंने काफी प्रयास किया. इसके अलावा वार्ड में जलभराव की समस्या भी उत्पन्न हो जाती है. वहीं गरीबों के शोषण को ओमप्रकाश जी सिर्फ वार्ड ही नहीं राष्ट्रीय स्तर के प्रमुख मुद्दों में से एक मानते हैं.

वहीं अपने कार्यकाल में उन्होंने वार्ड में शौचालय व स्नानघर का भी निर्माण कराया. साथ ही तमाम विरोध के वाबजूद क्षेत्र में फलदार बाग का वृक्षारोपण भी किया. इसके अलावा वार्ड में सड़कों, नालियों के निर्माण के समेत ओमप्रकाश जी ने कई अन्य विकास कार्यों को भी पूर्ण कराया.

वर्तमान में जिस तेजी सार्वजनिक क्षेत्रों व कंपनियों का निजीकरण किया जा रहा है. उसे ओमप्रकाश जी देश का सबसे बड़ा व खतरनाक मुद्दा मानते हैं. ओमप्रकाश जी के अनुसार, निजीकरण में पारदर्शिता की कमी होती है, जिस कारण गरीबों का लगातार शोषण हो रहा है. जिससे न सिर्फ समानता के अधिकार का हनन हो रहा है, बल्कि देश के विकास में भी बाधा उत्पन्न हो रही है.
