One of the important failures of our health care delivery system in India is lack of trauma centres that can help in providing acute trauma life support (ATLS) within the "golden hour" of trauma. A great job is being done under the able leadership of AIIMS, Delhi at Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Centre (JPNTC) . But ladies and gentlemen, is it enough for the population of 1 billion plus country? Unfortunately our priorties in this country are misplaced or rather misconceived? So inspite of the fact that road traffic accidents (RTA) are increasing day by day, there is no corresponding growth or establishment of trauma centres in our country. We have a good model in JPNTC in New Delhi but that can't serve the whole country. So I suggest that there should be an effort from the National Health Mission (NHM) to fund the establishment of trauma centres network throughout the country on National Highways at key locations on a war footing with human resources being provided on a short-term and long-term deputation from both central as well as state governments and if required even from the military and diaspora physicians of India. We have a ready model with us in JPMTC. We just need to replicate it across the country with required tweaking. So May I request all the stake holders, the union health ministry, state governments, transport ministry and the NHAI to make a high powered committee comprising of the greatest minds in our medical system and management to come with an action plan and have at least 4 trauma centres in the east, west, north and south by the end of the tenure of this government. I invite and request anybody and everybody who believes in this great cause to suggest ideas on how to achieve this target and join this discussion and take this initiative further.
