राजनीति की लम्बी पारी खेल चुके भाजपा के कद्दावर नेता सुरेश चंद्र अवस्थी लखनऊ के पूर्व महापौर होने के साथ ही तीन बार पार्षद रह चुके हैं तथा वर्तमान में उनकी पत्नी पार्षद पद पर कार्यरत हैं. एक साधारण परिवार से आये सुरेश जी अपनी बड़े भाई के व्यापार में उनका हाथ बटातें हैं. इसके अलावा क्षेत्रीय स्तर पर पार्टी के सभी कार्यों में वह बढ़- चढ़ कर भाग लेते हैं.

राजनीतिक पदार्पण –

हिंदुवादी संगठन राष्ट्रीय स्वयं सेवक संघ (आरएसएस) से सामाजिक व राजनीतिक  क्षेत्र में कदम रखने वाले सुरेश चंद्र अवस्थी सन् 1990 में भाजपा में शामिल हुए और यहीं से उन्होंने सक्रिय राजनीति की शुरूआत की. उन्होंने अटल जी के साथ ही कई चुनाव अभियानों में अहम भूमिका निभायी. इसके बाद 2002 में भाजपा ने उन्हें पार्षदी का टिकट दिया. जिसके बाद वह लगातार तीन बार क्षेत्र के पार्षद चुने गए. इसके बाद 25 मार्च 2017 को उन्हें लखनऊ का मेयर भी निर्वाचित किया गया. वर्तमान में भाजपा की प्रगति के लिए वह पार्टी में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहे हैं.

पार्षद के रूप में सुरेश अवस्थी जी ने अपने क्षेत्र में कई कार्य किए. सुरेश जी स्वच्छता को सबसे महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दा मानते हैं, जिसके चलते उन्होंने इस दिशा में कई कार्य किए व वार्ड के लोगों को स्वच्छता के प्रति जागरूक किया. इसके अलावा उन्होंने लोगों के टहलने के लिए अपने वार्ड के सभी 52 वार्डों में पाथवे बनवाया तथा आज भी लोग उसका लाभ उठा रहे हैं.
